Two Girls

A few years ago, J and I sat down to watch one of those movies that I like to refer to as, "an oldie, but goodie". Maybe you've heard of it--White Christmas.

Or maybe not.

It's one of those black-and-white films that makes me pine for simpler times, for all the pretty everyday dresses they wore during the 1950s and for busting into song and dance at the drop of a hat.

Lately, I've had fragments of one of the movie's songs in my mind. It's called Sisters and here are some bits and pieces of it:

"Sisters, sisters, there were never such devoted sisters. . .

Caring, sharing ev'ry little thing that we are wearing. . .

All kinds of weather, we stick together, the same in the rain or sun

Two diff'rent faces, but in tight places, we think and we act as one

Those who've seen us know that not a thing could come between us. . ."

I've started singing it in my mind when I see Carly and Hannah interact. I really just repeat the "sisters, sisters" part, to be honest. . the other words usually escape me.

But, here are a few scenarios that make me think of the chorus:

When Carly wakes up and asks, "What's Hannah doing?"

Carly stopping to tell us, "Baby's a cutie pie" or "Ohhhh, baby's so cute mom."

When Hannah's face lights up with a smile as Carly comes around her bouncy seat or her bed.

Carly telling everyone who will listen, "That's my sister."

Carly kissing Hannah gently on the top of her head.

Carly asking to help give Hannah a bottle.

As we're driving in the car, Carly commenting, "We're two girls, Mom". . .

I am grateful that Carly has adjusted well to being a big sister. She and I talk often about Hannah moving into their room--how in a few years, Carly and Hannah can laugh together at night as they fall asleep, how Carly can sing her songs and teach her the ABC's.

I love the fact that Carly and Hannah have each other as sisters now--and I especially love that they have a lifetime to build a friendship. That is definitely one of my prayers for them--that they would stick together through thick and thin, be devoted to one another, cheer each other on in whatever they pursue as individuals. . . that they would proudly point to the other and say, "That's my sister."

Awww.... it can happen, Beth! That's totally how I am with my sister. She's my best friend on the planet and always has been.
