"I Had Fun, Mommy"

I lost track of how many times Carly told me this Halloween night and over the weekend.

J and I decided last-minute on Friday to take some friends up on their offer to come over to their neighborhood and trick-or-treat (we didn't trick or treat, of course, but Carly did--not that we couldn't have gotten away with it; is anyone else amazed at the number of older kids who trick or treat??)

Before this year, Carly had never trick-or-treated. Her first year, she was days old; when she was 1 we placed her on her Uncle Trent and Aunt Meggan's front porch, rang the doorbell, and took a picture; last year, she went to a Halloween party with other kids but didn't really know what was going on. So, this was her first year to experience the excitement and "entitlement" of knocking on people's doors for candy.

I must say, all the scary costumes threw her for a bit of a loop. She did talk about those afterwards, too. "The monsters scare me, Mom." We talked about the fact that they were pretend and they were people dressed up as monsters--not quite sure she grasps the concept of pretend yet, so that will be a continuing conversation.

Over the past few days, Carly has laid her candy out on the table, asking me about each piece, repeating the name of each type of candy (taffy, smarties, suckers, licorlish, as she says). I'm glad, and a litle surprised, that she hasn't asked to eat more of it. I think she considers all the pieces of candy as toys, though, and wants to keep them around for awhile.

Hannah was a trooper through it all, as she's proved over the past seven months. She endured wearing her costume for hours with no complaints. Sleeping bunny, as I liked to call her, later in the evening.

Happy November everyone--it's officially hot chocolate season now, which I love!
