Fun on the 4th

Carly woke up the morning of the 4th and this is what she asked me:

"Wanna go to the beach, Mommy?"

We live 100s of miles from the closest beach, so that had to have come from a cartoon that she has watched. We are a somewhat-spontaneous family, but not that spontaneous--especially on a holiday and especially when gas prices are near $4 a gallon.

So, we had to settle for the pool instead. We trekked over to a friend's house and spent the afternoon outside. This was our beach for the day.

Carly seems to be unaffected by the hot weather (it has basically hovered around 100 degrees for the past week). And, she's just like J--slather that girl with 50+ SPF sunscreen and sit her in the sun for one hour--and it looks like she's been tanning for months. We were only outside for a few hours, until a nap beckoned (it was beckoning Mommy and Daddy more than it was beckoning Carly. . . ) But, those few hours were packed full of water fun. . . .

Carly kicked. . . .

She jumped. . .

She moved rocks one at a time (is this really how the Egyptians built the pyramids--carrying one brick at a time?)

She wrangled the pool vacuum at one point--and happily sprayed everything in sight.

Then, it was time for a snack and a drink (a drink from a very large cup, I might add. I was tempted to remind her to come up for air.)

After dinner, we feasted on Grammy's homemade strawberry shortcake--quite the treat.

In the car on the way home, we saw multiple fireworks shows. Being Carly's first experience with fireworks where she could actually verbalize her thoughts, we heard lots of the following:

"Oh, WOW! Look at that one."

"Wow, that's a big one."

"I like the sparklies."

"Let's do it again."

I think she somehow thought we had the controls for these fireworks and could make them appear at will--good thing we saw them pretty continuously all the way home.

We had a great day as a family. At day's end, we ALL were ready to rest--even Carly-- and she's a tough sell on napping and going to bed.

Happy Independence Day!

Sounds like a great day.
